You should also be aware that while there are effectively only two aspect ratios (4:3 and 16:9) used in DVDs and TV broadcasts, movies can have various other aspect ratios, for example while most movies these days are widescreen, they typically have an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 which is wider than the 16:9 of a widescreen TV, therefore when playing these on a TV you should get a black border top and bottom (but not the sides). One last issue I have seen has been the BBC broadcasting TV shows that are 4:3 and have originated from the USA and therefore were originally NTSC with 720x480 pixels. I have seen this appear on a PAL widescreen TV with black borders on all sides. It appears that the BBC have used only 480 of the 576 vertical pixels on a PAL TV resulting in unwanted black borders top and bottom. This means that the aspect ratio is also in theory slightly squashed vertically from the original 4:3. The BBC should have vertically...
