...along the lines of an 'appliance' type device, made from a redundant PC, in much the same way as firewalls like 'Smoothwall', or some of the GPL NAS (Network Attachable Storage) units, work. In effect a recycled PC that booted straight into sequencer mode. There would be no trouble with patch/sequence storage, and a clean kernal woudl run fast on a quite basic machine. When you think what could be done on an Atari.... I did a cruder version of this with BBC micro, one version of which is still running as a light controller, (you could put programs in EPROM and they would run after boot). Sadly the BBC is only a 2MHz 6502, so is not up to the job of a modern sequencer with a control surface, but will do a reasonable bit of MIDI playing. If you are building a gadget using obsolete technology, make sure you keep some spares, at least enough to cover you whilst you design a mark 2, when they start to run out. I learned this the hard way with my first domestic heating control system, built using an old obsolete PLC. One night it died, and we had a cold week whilst I built a new one. My mum, who I lived with back then, was not happy. Mark 2 used an old BBC micro.I had loads of spares, and of course, true to Murphy's law, it was still running when we sold the house years later. If anyone wants a BBC, by the way, let me know, I've got quite a few, legacy's from when I did repairs for local schools: when they all went to PC's I kept being offered the old stuff. They've got a Texas 76489 sound gen as well as a load of usable IO. Postage outside the UK might be a killer, sadly. Mike

...some kind of two osciullator soft sync, at my best guess. I don't know enough SID yet, to know if it is possible. The 'Little Phatty' is definitely the Mini-Moog for the 21st century. On similar lines, I hope I can get a SID to do something like this: http://www.colinfras...000/syncron.mp3. This is only a partial sample, because I haven't got anywhere to 'park' one of my own. It's an early digital, the 'Music 500' add on for the BBC Micro, which had a discrete component DCO system in it. Mike

well ive not seen a c64 user group thats still arround in the UK. I know of a BBC micro one and and atari one, that still do some things, but i aint seen a c64 one arround, and ive never herd of user groups having such massive stock piles of chips laying arround that they give stuff away. But hey lucky you titan!

...ie the one directly above, the one to the left and the one to the right. assigning values to the colour or stae, and using this to determine the next state. It can be very hypnotic, and there are lots of rule sets, and you can do a pre-determined or random 'seed' row to start things off. If you want to play with them (WARNING - Additive!), try CelLab http://www.fourmilab.ch/cellab/ By the way - it is quite possible to make them play tunes, though my last attempt was on a BBC micro. We're aware that XBMC now supports PowerPC hardware. It also runs on OS X Tiger, Apple TV, Windows, Linux, Xbox and BBC Micro, and we have no desire to support any of those either :)

...to play with. It's a cool idea, but if it were my project, I'd be looking at a feeze point around now. When you do V2, you can add in your new ideas, and probably do a clean re-write, which will incorporate all you've learned so far. You'll end up a slicker fuller featured machine, but with leaner code. You'll also learn what seemed like a good idea, but never got used, and so can be left out. Believe me I've been there: I wrote a sequencer running on a BBC micro that got too bloated to hold any decent length of sequence. I was a bit like those car customizers that don't know when to stop adding twiddly chrome bits and blue lights. I never used the final thing much. Mike

Never had a C64, though a friend once asked me to make him a sampler out of a VIC-20. I bought an expansion board, extra RAM, a machine code monitor cartridge, and spent a lot of time finding out that it was too slow to do anything useful, (I think I managed something like 5 seconds of 8KHz sample rate) Then the Greengate DS3 came out. Found MIDIbox whilst looking for control surface info, read up and just wanted to build them all... I had a BBC Micro, back in the day - still have some too. I must try and get the 'Music 500' unit I have working again, this was a BBC driven hardware digital synth, but most of the time sounded the wrong sort of cheesy.

Beaten to the punch here! The SN76489 is also used in the BBC Micro, so I might just do ROM for one of them and see if 2MHz 6502 is enough to drive it from MIDI. The BBC would make a reasonable control surface - it's got a 4channel 10 bit A-->D in the joystick port, a free VIA in the user port, and well as loads of other goodies. You can easily drive an LCD from the userport. If anyone in the UK/Europe needs a BBC, I've got a few to spare. Postage any further is horrendous. Mike

Hi Sasha I'm with you on the normal use of paper, but I use that technique a lot in the past to try out panel ideas. I still have a bench microprocessor power supply with a paper front panel from years ago - I never thought it worth spending the money on engraving. The secret to it's long life is that the paper, (Print from a BBC micro on a Dot Matrix!), is under a clear plastic over panel, held down by all the 4mm sockets. If I want a graphic or 'flowchart' style panel, as I will with some of my analogue stuff, then it's not that easy to get things like that engraved, and a colour print, under a protective film, or a mirror image print onto a clear film can look good. There are colour graphic effects that can only be printed too, like gradient tints, or, if you like the...
